This is a Queen Elizabeth II Gold Sovereign from 1990 with the Third Head design. The reverse features the traditional George and Dragon design. This coin features the Third portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Maklouf - this year was issued in proof form only. This proof has been struck using specially selected blanks and highly polished dies. During striking, the coinage dies exert enormous pressure on the coin blank, with at least two separate blows (or strikes), ensuring that the impression has extra clarity. No box or certificate is provided with this.
The sovereign is a 22ct gold coin of the United Kingdom, with 7.99 grams and a nominal value of one pound sterling. Struck from 1817 until the present time, it was originally a circulating coin accepted in Britain and elsewhere in the world; it is now a bullion coin and is sometimes mounted in jewellery. In most recent years, it has borne the well-known design of Saint George and the Dragon on the reverse—the initials (B P) of the designer, Benedetto Pistrucci, may be seen to the right of the date.
